What are the phases of a company’s internationalization process?

When it comes to the internationalization of a company, it is common not to have a very clear roadmap or plan to follow to succeed in this expansion. However, knowing the stages in which it should be done can help a lot. That is why, from UR Global, in this article we are going to explain what the phases of a company’s internationalization process are.

Internationalization of a company

As we have already seen in other posts on the UR Globalblog, internationalizinga company has several advantages. Therefore, expanding your company into other markets in other territories is always going to be an interesting move at a strategic level. However, to make the leap with greater security and confidence, it is very useful to know what the phases of a company’s internationalization process are.

Phases of the internationalization of a company

There are 4 phases in the process of internationalization of a company:

Internal analysis and the feasibility of internationalization

In this first phase of internationalizing an organization, the characteristics of the organization at the present time must be taken into account (internal analysis), in relation to the business objectives and their degree of compliance. This is how you can see if the company is really ready to internationalize or not.

To do this, it is highly recommended to use tools such as SWOT analysis (Weaknesses, Threats, Strengths and Opportunities), which will help us understand how the organization is functioning.

Solvency study of the organization

Once we know the starting point at which the company would be before its expansion, the next phase in the internationalization process of a company is to check the resources it has. This can give clues as to the financial and economic risks that the organization may or may not afford to take, also depending on the country it is considering expanding to. It can be useful to have tax and accounting advice in this phase.

Choose the new market where the company will operate

Once the solvency of the company is known, you can start to consider in which market or markets the business can work best. Therefore, the next phase of a company’s internationalization process will aim to decide where it is going to expand, where it is going to start developing its core business.

Therefore, just as an internal analysis of the company was previously made, in this phase a study of the markets that are considered for internationalization is made. Aspects such as production costs, taxes and tax pressure, possible competition or legal aspects are taken into account (for which it is useful to have international tax advice).

Determine the strategy to use in the chosen destination

This is the last phase of a company’s internationalization process. Once the territory where the organization’s activity is planned to be developed has been chosen, strategic decisions must be made about how and how much is going to be invested in the new project. For example, the sales channels, the legal form in which it will be carried out (branches, subsidiaries, etc.), how and how much budget will be allocated to personnel and human resources management, etc.

At UR Global we are experts in internationalizing companies. For this reason, we recommend that you have professional help from our experts in strategic consulting to make this type of decision minimizing risks and guaranteeing benefits.
