Visas and work permits

A work visa is a document generally issued by a country's consular representations abroad, following prior approval, which enables foreign nationals to enter and remain in that country's territory. This visa is the legal document that allows a foreign national to stay in a country for a specified period and under certain employment conditions. At UR Global, we are experts in expatriate taxation and offer specialised advisory on visa management for expatriate workers and international mobility processes.

When is it necessary to apply for a visa or work permit?

In most cases, work visas are issued for employment, academic or tourism purposes. There are also other, less common reasons.

Whenever travelling abroad, we recommend checking whether a visa is required based on the destination, purpose and length of stay, as failure to complete the required procedures may result in denial of entry to the destination country.

Frequently asked questions

About Visas and work permits

Although they may appear to be the same thing, a differentiation is necessary since it can sometimes lead to misunderstandings.

The validity of the work visa refers to the date on which the validity of the visa ends.

The duration, on the other hand, refers to the maximum time of stay allowed in the destination country.

There are countries in which the validity of the visa can be, for example, five years, and yet the maximum stay allowed at each of the entries will be, for example, 30 days.

One of the important issues in visas is the number of entries they allow in the target country.

In general, we can differentiate visas with one, two or multiple entries:

  • Single entry visa: This work visa will allow entry into the country only once. In case of departure, it will be necessary to issue another visa to re-enter in a legal manner.
  • Two-entry visa: Similar to the single-entry work visa, with the difference that in this case one can enter twice, as long as these occur within the validity period of the visa.

Multiple entry visa: allows you to enter and leave the country during the validity period of the visa in accordance with the conditions established by each country.
